Jan's Story

Hello! So many people have visited my page and haven't even left a note! Please, I'd love to hear from you!!! Sorry that I've not been checking Classmates, but getting the house ready for sale is a huge task. Inside and out needed painting, power-washing, etc. Added more living space (meaning more $$), to the half-basement. It's going slowly as I'm getting it done as and when the people can and (sorry Uncle Sam) they are being paid in cash. Hope everyone is enjoying their Summer---and remember the Summers we had!!! Now those were THE BEST summers ever! I get so many emails each day that if I'm not on it for a week, there can be as many as 500+ as I have so many interests and trying to add more home-based business information. Just know that seeing a visit, with or without an email (sigh), means the world to me. Hey, if you take the time to read my story, why not send a short email to me? It would be wonderful to hear from you! (And I could certainly use some cheering-up!) Where has the time gone? I had hoped to have the house up for sale by the end of May, but things are going slowly. Then, depending on how much interest there is, will go look for a smaller home; I'll be moving to central Illinois near our son. We were always close and he even calls me Ma. The homes and taxes are far lower than here and it'll be nice to have a very handy man nearby when I need help. (As I am "youthening" I turned 59 last December; stole that idea from the movie "Camelot" as that's what Merlin did. We'll see how that goes :) I've not been doing much in the way of e-mails, as I want to get everything done around here. It's certainly not easy or quick! Plus, have to watch La Budget. BUT, I plan on attending our 50th Reunion---and hope all of you will, too!!! That's it for now. Will write more when I can. Glad to see new classmates have joined up! If you're still in touch with others who have not joined--get them interested in catching up with all of us! Just lately, a near and dear friend joined up and am thrilled! Am glad to see that quite a few people have added something to their story! Good for you! Rather than just being listed with no picture and no story makes no sense, right? Anyone who would like to come to my home and help me go through boxes (and more boxes), move things that I cannot or help in any way would be greatly appreciated! (Now I know that you're chomping at the bit to do such mundane chores, right?) There is so much to go through! All of Mick's clothing from hats to shoes (and some of my clothing) will be going to the Veteran's Home. I'm giving a lot of the furniture to my Son as I will be living in a much smaller home and he needs it more than I do. Must run, things are not going as quickly as I would hope and the workmen can't do much with everything on the walls, things in the closets and so forth. It will be bittersweet leaving this home as Mick and I chose everything together when we saw the builder. But, as we all know, change is the only constant in life. Would you believe that I read that most people move about every 5 to 8 years? Honest! (They must like packing a great deal, eh?) Well, time to go through everything in my home and decide what I want to take with me when I move sometime between late Spring and early Summer of 2018. This was something that both Mick and I wanted to do and now it'll be just me, our Doberman (Sabrina, Empress of the Universe) and my three cats. Am really, really hoping that we will be gone before Memorial Day as there's too many (illegal) fireworks. It will be a real change and I'm excited and a bit nervous. After all, very few homes have exactly what you want. That's all for now and would LOVE to hear from you!!! Thank you to all who wrote to me! It meant a great deal to me and is helping me to cope with Mick's passing. When you spend a lifetime with someone, it's hard to accept that they are in Heaven and not by your side. Am glad that he's in Heaven, all healthy and happy, spending time with everyone (person and pets) that meant so much to him. My husband, Mick, passed on very late on September 1st, 2014 During this very sad time, please offer up some prayers for him as it would mean a great deal to me. Many, many thanks! I was able to meet Eileen Burns Robbs' daughter. She's gorgeous and highly intelligent--not only that, she is one of the sweetest, kindest people I've met! She reminds me of all three Burns sisters combined! (I call her the daughter I never had!!) Update: Eileen's daughter, Courtney, was married a year ago and has just had a baby boy, Gunnar. He's certainly a lucky little boy to have such great parents! Zac was still overseas serving his country when Gunnar arrived, but was there a few days later while on leave. He, too, is wonderful! They certainly make a wonderful couple---and wish them all the best as a family. By the way, there were so many people that just about everyone knew and there MAY be a now or a then picture, but no story. Why? (And, if I can get a couple pictures on Classmates, so can you!) We were classmates, friends and confidantes and am sure everyone would like to know how you've been and what you've been up to. You don't have to tell anything you don't want to (as this is not one of those tabloid rags) but to share even a little bit of your life would be nice. And don't wait!!!!! I went to 3 (4?) elementary schools, 3 high schools and 1 college; please don't feel offended if I don't remember you as I still have yet to find my yearbooks and many of my elementary school pictures were lost.) As my parents were in the jewelry business, we moved closer to the newer stores. Guess you could call me a professional at being the new kid in school. Sorry it's taken so long to add what's been going on. Had lunch with Eileen Burns (we met halfway) and then toured Villa Park. It's changed SO much! Then Eileen and Donna and I went up to Wisconsin to visit with Kathe---such loving sisters! We had a great time and i...Expand for more
t was like only a short time had passed since we all lived in Villa Park. We were closer than best friends, more like sisters. Don't want too much time pass until we can get together again, but we all live far away from each other--hoping for a mild Winter and an early Spring! They are all as gorgeous as ever. When time permits, will get some very old negatives processed somehow and post them on Classmates. My time working with the Humane Society keeps me busy, as do my fosters and my own pets. Sooner or later I'll be able to find the yearbooks to jog my memory as to who's who. I went to so many schools, the mind gets a bit boggled after all these years!! Or is it, as I often say, "A Blonde Thing?" (Am a bit worried that they were accidentially recycled as the same thing happened to my work history, letters of reference, things that I helped publish, etc.) Please keep your fingers crossed! What I've done as an employee means nothing compared to the yearbooks filled with signatures and funny, funny notes! It's been a long time since high school, but I have fond memories of friends, parties and the good times we had. We all have grown up, but know you are all still the same wonderful people I knew in the good old days. It's hard to believe it's been 45 years--time flies when you're having fun, eh? I REFUSE to give to the Red Cross, etc., as they pay very high salaries to their so-called directors, etc. (When Laura Bush was head of the Red Cross, her yearly salary was $500,000!! (And I'm a die-hard Republican, yet that upset me no end!!) That's not what the people who give to the Red Cross think their donation is for! Those affected by Superstorm Sandy finally had to put up their own website as all the millions of dollars still haven't reached them! Unfair! And PETA is a joke! They don't want you to have caged birds---or even a fish tank as they think it is cruel--go figure! YET THEY HAVE STILL NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET THE SPRING-LOADED LEG TRAP BANNED! One can only imagine what kind of salaries they pay to these people who aren't going after the most important issues first! Sorry to go on about this, but people need to know where their money is going and what the charities are doing with it!! There seems to be a major gap in my story; so please just page down to the rest of it, Eileen Burns and I went to Villa Park in 2012 and I finally saw my home at 33 E. Congress. Granted, I figured it would look a bit different, but the town finally planted trees! Unfortunately, I wasn't thrilled at how my home so many years ago looks now. But, it's not my home anymore and everyone has their own way of landscaping (even if it looks like it needs help!) We also took a drive around Willowbrook. It looks SO different! Didn't like what they did to the main entrance and whose idea was it to paint the rock a hideous shade of purple?? I do what I can for each"Little Person in a Fur Coat" who come for a visit until there's room at the shelter. Have had Dobermans since 1975; there's just something about the breed that works perfectly for me. And don't believe everything you hear about them! People make any dog mean---as they say, good dog--bad owner! Don't get me wrong, I do love people, too! It's just that so much of my time revolves around God's creatures. Just returned from visiting my favorite cousin in Florida and they have such an ideal home and the landscaping is fabulous! Of course, they have a pool and pool cage, so they can have their doors to the lanai open and their pets can come and go as they please. (Don't know what my bunch would think of that.) And, of course, I doubt we'd have a pool, but it would be great to have a large, screened lanai area that we could all enjoy. There have been quite a few people who stopped at my page, but didn't leave any message; would love to read a few lines. While I realize everyone is busy, busy, busy, it only takes a couple of minutes to write something, eh?? The persons from my past who I'd most like to see again are Eileen Burns, Donna Burns and Kathe Burns as we had a fabulous time and we spent many, many wonderful days together. If anyone knows where Kathy Stoltman Baran is, please let me know. Will be able to see Jan Tobusch Oliver at the reunion and couldn't be happier! She stopped by my little home in Westmont with a bag of seed for all the Mallard ducks I fed. We talked for some time and then finally realized we knew each other! (She's also the only one to meet my husband, as he travels a great deal on business.) We moved shortly thereafter way out to Will County. Granted, it's lovely out here, but so far from everyone! My best friend lives in Brookfield and has sold her home and now is packing for their move to Tennessee. Guess we'll be moving in a few years to a more temperate climate, but no tropical climates for us! Just can't picture myself Christmas shopping in shorts and while it's lovely to visit, just can't picture us living there. Would also enjoy hearing from everyone I knew at Willowbrook and Foreman and find out how they are and what they've been up to! It's been so long and don't want to wait 40 more years! It's hard to believe we're all in our 60's---bet you are still great people! We may be grown-ups, but there's a teenager inside us all. Listening to old records, cd's and, of course, WLS-FM, floods my mind with the great times. And I know deep down inside that the best is yet to come for all! Let's hear how you are all doing !!! Also, if you know how to get in touch with someone who is not on Classmates, please(!) let me know. We can always keep in touch via e-mail, right?? Cheers, Jan If I won $100 million, I'd give most of it to the animal shelter and St. Jude Hospital, then spend the rest on a home with fabulous landscaping and trips to our favorite place in the mid-Florida Keys and visiting those friends of mine who are out of state, especially Texas that is so dear to my heart.
